The Rachel Incident Series: Author Caroline O’Donoghue Dishes on Adapting Her Bestselling Novel

Caroline O’Donoghue, the brilliant author behind The Rachel Incident, and producers Matt Jordan Smith and Chelsea Morgan Hoffman recently dished on adapting the bestselling novel into an upcoming TV series. They took a break from filming to give us the inside scoop at Dublin's Storyhouse screenwriting festival, and we are absolutely buzzing!

For those who devoured the book, you know The Rachel Incident throws us back to Cork in 2010. We follow Rachel, a student working in a bookstore, who strikes up an effervescent friendship with her insistently heterosexual roommate, James. When Rachel develops a HUGE crush on her professor, James helps her hatch a plan to seduce him after a book launch at the store. It's messy, it's real, and it perfectly captures those complicated early twenties feelings.

O'Donoghue shared that transitioning from novel to TV meant some big changes, like expanding from Rachel's first-person perspective to include other characters' viewpoints. We get to see the full picture of those relationships, which honestly sounds incredible. Matt Jordan Smith of Elliot Page’s Page Boy Productions spoke about how deeply the book's portrayal of messy, loving female friendships resonated with him. We totally get it; those bonds are everything!

With a fantastic cast including Máiréad Tyers, Ellis Howard, Sarah Greene, and the ever-charming Daniel Ings, we know we're in for a treat. This series is currently in production for Channel 4, Universal Content Production, and Element Pictures, and we're already counting down the days until we can binge it.
