Sonja is the main character we didn't know we needed this year. Watching her stand up to her grandma and finally get some independence hits so much harder once you know what she's been through. Hakim is giving love interest energy without the movie needing to make him the whole point, which we respect. This one is going to make you cry and then immediately want to sign up for a dance class. Sonja's transformation from grieving and overlooked to fully in charge of her own life is the kind of arc that sticks with you.
What is Boss Cat about?
After her mother dies suddenly, Sonja (Olivia Hargroder) has to care for her teenage sister Emma (Julia Savage) while living under the control of her grandmother Doris (Penny Downie). Sonja is a young woman with Down syndrome who spends her early twenties trying to prove she can run her own life. A chance meeting with the charismatic Hakim leads her to a krump class, and the dance style gives her a way to release everything she has been holding in. As she gets stronger in the class, Sonja starts making her own choices instead of letting Doris make them for her. The film shows her fight to be taken seriously as an adult, on her own terms.
