The GreatTV-show · 2020

Okay, so if you're into historical dramas but also want something that feels totally unhinged and modern, The Great is your new obsession. Elle Fanning absolutely nails it as Catherine, who starts out as an idealist but quickly learns how to play the game in the most deliciously chaotic way. And Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter? We are absolutely not okay after watching him be a terrible, yet somehow magnetic, mess. It's giving 'girl boss' energy meets a period drama that definitely doesn't take itself too seriously.
The Great reimagines the rise of Catherine the Great in 18th century Russia, offering a satirical and anachronistic take on history. It follows Catherine, an idealistic young woman, as she arrives at the Russian court to marry Emperor Peter and quickly realizes her new reality is far from what she imagined. Determined to bring enlightenment to a backward land, she navigates a treacherous political landscape and an explosive relationship with her capricious husband. The series blends sharp wit with dramatic intrigue, showcasing Catherine's transformation from a naive bride to a powerful leader.
