Love and Bug giving each other those nicknames and then having to actually live inside that cute origin story for fifteen months straight is exactly the kind of low key relationship content I am obsessed with. There is no big dramatic plot twist here, it is just two people figuring out if their relationship survives dishes in the sink and who forgot to pay a bill, which honestly feels more real than half the romance movies out there. The neighbors having full opinions about someone else's relationship is the group chat energy we all know too well. Watching Bug direct his own love story gives the whole thing this diary like intimacy that makes you feel like you are eavesdropping. It is soft, it is a little messy, and it will make you text your partner or your situationship immediately after. This is couple goals if couple goals meant surviving the mundane parts too.
What is Love/Bug about?
Love, played by Laurel Gregory, and Bug, played by Barnabus Walsh, are a couple who gave each other pet names early on and now live together as they test whether those names still fit fifteen months in. Their neighbors, played by Fern Taylor and Ewan Collins, orbit the relationship and add their own opinions on what Love and Bug are actually building together. The film watches the small, ordinary moments of cohabitation, the arguments over nothing and the tenderness that shows up right after. Bug also directed the movie, giving the story a personal, intimate feel to how the couple communicates and misreads each other. Neither Love nor Bug is positioned as clearly right, and the story stays inside their apartment and their routines rather than reaching for a bigger plot. Fifteen months becomes the test of whether the nicknames were ever really about who they are.
